A Little About Cookies
A recent Washington Post article, White House Says Web Site Counts Visitors, has generated quite a bit of talk and comment among various groups and in several on and offline periodicals. The article appeared Friday, 30 Dec 05. What followed was the usual talk and print of public ignorance, media arrogance, legality, privacy invasion, website owner's rights versus visitor's rights, ... . In following one thread, I was reminded of Kübler-Ross' Five Stages of Grief ; Denial (jokes and tongue-in-cheek comments), Resentment ("how dare they!"), Bargaining ("we should be looking at these things, not those things, and doing this about it. And while we're at it, how come we can't do things like..."), Depression ("why do things have to be the way they are?" and hostility) and finally, Acceptance ("hey, that's the way things are right now so get use to it").

Learning to Listen, Learning to See
Listening and seeing. You'd think those would be so obvious you wouldn't need to learn how to do them. Unfortunately, they're so obvious and so important that most content providers, marketers, developers, etc., don't pay much attention to them. It's kind of like watching the road when you drive a car. Of course you have to watch the road when you drive a car. Well, if that's so obvious, how come people still have accidents?

Measuring Value in Wikis and Blogs
I'm going to start this paper off by sharing some personal history. My job function is as a researcher, not in a single field but many, and often researching in these several fields as close to simultaneously as a single person can. I've had twenty-two books published in five fields of expertise and over 200 articles in more topics than most people care to count. I'm currently finishing my 23rd book and already have my 24th mapped out. I've held professorships and been a guest lecturer at several institutions of higher learning. My writing and work is referenced worldwide and I'm invited to speak at conferences both scientific and business, on topics ranging from "Linguistic and Cultural Migration of the Gaelic Language and Peoples" to "Six Web Techniques that Get New Business".
